About Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Entebbe Botanical Gardens

Entebbe Botanical Gardens, located along the northern shore of Lake Victoria in Uganda's Central Region, is one of the country's oldest and largest such gardens, established in 1898. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, the garden is situated near the town of Entebbe and is easily accessible from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The gardens serve both as a conservation area and a recreational destination, attracting botanists, nature lovers, and tourists. The site features a diverse collection of indigenous and exotic plant species, including towering mahogany trees, palms, and a wide range of tropical flora. Its proximity to Lake Victoria enhances the biodiversity, with waterbirds and other wildlife regularly spotted within the grounds. A major highlight is the wildlife population, notably the habituated colonies of black-and-white colobus monkeys as well as other primates like vervet monkeys, which freely roam the area, providing popular photo opportunities and a chance to observe African primates in a semi-natural environment. The gardens also have a small animal sanctuary and several well-maintained picnic areas, walking paths, and shaded spots ideal for family outings and educational tours. Historically, Entebbe Botanical Gardens played a role in botanical research and plant acclimatization during colonial times and continues to contribute to conservation education today. Visitors appreciate the peaceful trails and lakeside views, as well as opportunities for bird watching and photography. The gardens are a pleasant escape from urban life, offering both locals and international visitors an accessible and enriching outdoor destination in Uganda.
